After three years spent retooling, sometimes slowly reconfiguring the roster and sometimes completely transforming it, the Rockets not only plan to become contenders, the strategies for building the team have shifted dramatically from long-term hopes to short term aspirations.
“We’re focused on winning now,” Rockets general manager Daryl Morey said. “Everything is all-in on right now. We had Yao Ming and Tracy McGrady, both great players, and it looked like that run would be a long time. Your chances to be very good are very special. When you have them, you have to focus 100 percent on getting as far as possible.
“Our young guys have to step up. We’re not there. We’re not a finished team. We’re not a finished product. We’re focused on we want to be great come mid-April. That’s our focus. We need to get ourselves homecourt in the first round and making sure we’re humming come mid-April with guys stepping up or whatever is needed.”
